A Few Big Cards or Many Small Ones?
Should you buy a few big cards or many smaller ones? Here are the real trade-offs in upside, risk, and effort, and how I decide what fits my collection.

One of the oldest questions in the hobby is whether to put your money into a couple of big cards or spread it across a lot of smaller ones. There's no single right answer, but there are real trade-offs, and which side you land on says a lot about what kind of collector you are.
Both approaches can work. They just come with different upside, different risk, and a very different amount of work.
The case for a few big cards
A marquee card has more upside, since the best cards can climb a long way. There's also far less work on the back end, because you're only buying, storing, and eventually selling one or two pieces instead of fifty. The trade-off is concentration risk: if that one card cools off, it hits your collection much harder.
The case for many smaller cards
Spreading out is more diversified, so no single miss sinks you, and it's easier to sell a bit at a time when you need to. The downsides are that it's a lot more work to buy, organize, and move that many cards, and the upside on any single one is smaller.
It depends on what kind of collector you are
If you love the chase and can stomach bigger swings, a few big cards might suit you. If you'd rather have something steadier and more flexible, spreading it out makes more sense.

I don't think either approach is "correct." It comes down to your goals, your budget, and how much volatility you're actually comfortable with. This is a way to think through the trade-offs, not a recommendation to build your collection one way or the other.
