Auction vs. Buy It Now for Selling Cards

Auction or Buy It Now? I usually lean Buy It Now, but auctions have their place. Here's how I decide which format to use when selling a card on eBay.

When it's time to sell, one of the first choices you'll make is auction or Buy It Now. I usually lean toward Buy It Now, but there's a real case for auctions in the right situation, and knowing when to use each has saved me from leaving money on the table.

The two formats reward very different things, so I try to match the format to the card and to how quickly I need it gone.

Why I usually prefer Buy It Now

With Buy It Now, you set your price and wait for the right buyer, instead of leaving the outcome to whoever happens to be watching on a given night. It lowers the risk of a card selling for well under what it's worth just because the timing was off.

When an auction makes sense

If you need to move a card quickly, an auction gets it sold on a set timeline. It can also let the market find the price on something that's hard to comp, where you genuinely don't know what it should go for.

Check what's already listed first

Before you run an auction, look at what else is out there. If there are several similar cards listed at similar prices, that competition will cap what yours can realistically pull. An auction really only works when there's demand and there isn't a wall of the exact same card sitting next to yours.

Conclusion

For most cards, I set a fair Buy It Now and stay patient. For a fast sale, or a hard-to-price card, an auction has its place. How you sell should come down to your timeline and the card in front of you. This is my approach, not a rulebook.
