How to Handle a Hot Card Market
When the card market runs hot, everything feels like a winner, which is exactly when it's easy to overpay. Here's how I try to stay level in a hot market.

The card hobby carries real financial risk, so please do your own research and make your own decisions.
When the market is running hot, everything feels like a winner, and that's exactly when it's easiest to get carried away. Here's how I try to think through a hot market instead of just riding the wave and hoping.
Hot markets bring rising prices, plenty of hype, and a lot of FOMO. All of that makes it easy to overpay and to buy things you wouldn't touch in a calmer moment.
Keep buying, but get more selective
I'm not saying stop. A hot market is just when discipline matters most. I get pickier, and I lean toward cards I'd genuinely be happy to hold if things cooled off tomorrow.
Consider moving a few things
If prices are stretched on pieces you were already lukewarm about, a hot market can be a good window to trim. Nobody ever went broke taking a reasonable profit.
Don't chase every pump
The cards spiking the hardest are often the ones that give it all back the fastest. A price running straight up is a reason for caution, not automatic confidence.
Know your own numbers
It's a lot easier to make good decisions when you actually know your cost basis, so a "win" is a real win and not just a bigger number than you remembered paying. (I dig into that more in my post on real ROI.)
Conclusion
Whether you keep buying, hold, or trim really comes down to your goals and how much volatility you're comfortable with. I personally lean toward being selective when things get frothy. This is how I think about a hot market, not a call on what you should do with your collection.
