How to organize and store a growing collection

A handful of cards fits in a top loader on your desk. A few hundred needs a system — otherwise you spend more time hunting for a card than enjoying it.

Start with places, then containers

Think in layers: a location (a shelf, a closet), a container within it (a box, a binder, a bin), and optionally a slot inside that (a row and a spot, or a page and a pocket). You don't need to be rigid — even “Box B1” is enough to cut a search from the whole collection to one box.

Keep the index next to the cards

The hard part isn't storing cards, it's remembering where each one went. A digital index that records where every card lives means “where is my Mantle?” has an answer without opening five boxes.

Filing as you go beats a big cleanup

Assign a spot when a card arrives, not months later. It takes seconds each time and saves an afternoon of catching up — and it means the index is trustworthy when you actually need to find something.
