Are Unlicensed Cards Worth It? My Take

Unlicensed cards can look genuinely cool, and some of the designs are really creative. But over time I've come to think they carry a stigma that makes them harder to move, and that's worth understanding before you buy one expecting to resell it.

An unlicensed card is one made without the league or team license, which is why you'll see no team logos and often photos that carefully avoid showing them.

The upside

There's real appeal here. The designs can be creative and different, you can sometimes get autographs of players who aren't in licensed products, and they can be a cheaper way to own a card of a big name.

Why they're harder to move

• The stigma. A lot of collectors simply won't chase non-licensed cards, so the pool of buyers is smaller from the start.
• The photos. It's a little strange knowing a photo was picked specifically because it looks natural without a logo showing. Once you notice it, it's hard to unsee, and it can make the card feel a bit off.
• Resale. A smaller audience usually means softer resale and slower sales when you do want to move one.

Where they can make sense

If you love the design or the player and you're buying to keep, none of the resale concerns really matter. A card you enjoy looking at is doing its job.

Conclusion

For a personal collection, buy the unlicensed card if you think it looks cool. If resale is part of your thinking, just go in knowing the buyer pool is smaller and it may sit longer. That's my opinion, not a rule, and plenty of collectors feel differently.
