Variation
Also called: photo variation, SP variation
A variation is a card that shares a base card's number but uses a different photo or design element, usually printed as a short print. Variations are a common way sets hide a chase.
A variation reuses the same card number as the base card but swaps in a different image or detail, for example a different photo, an alternate uniform, or an added logo. They are typically short prints or super short prints, so finding one takes luck or a sharp eye.
Spotting a variation can mean knowing the tells, since the card number stays the same as the common version.
Why it matters: because they look like a normal base card at a glance, variations are frequently undervalued by sellers who do not notice them, which is where attentive collectors find deals.
