Card types & finishes
Base card
A base card is a standard card from a set's main checklist, with no special finish, numbering, or added memorabilia. It is the most common version of any card.
Every set has a base checklist, the full run of standard cards for that product. These have a normal cardstock and design and are printed in the largest quantities, so they are the easiest cards to find and usually the least valuable.
Nearly everything else in a set is built on top of the base card: a parallel is a recolored version of it, an insert is a separate themed subset, and a refractor adds a shiny finish.
Why it matters: base cards set the floor. A rookie's base card is where most collectors start, and the price gap between a base card and its rarer parallels tells you how much the finish and print run are worth.
