Grading

Population report

Also called: pop report, pop

A population report, or pop report, is a grader's public count of how many of a card it has graded at each grade. It is a key scarcity signal for graded cards.

Each major grader publishes how many copies of a given card it has graded and at what grades. If a card has a low "pop" at the top grade, there are few known high-grade examples, at least from that company.

Collectors check the pop report before buying or grading to gauge rarity and how hard the top grade is to hit.

Why it matters: a low population at gem mint supports a higher price, while a ballooning pop can pressure values down. It is an estimate, not a hard cap, since more cards are graded over time.

This glossary is a plain-language reference for collectors, not financial or purchasing advice. Card values move, so always check recent sales before you buy or sell.
