Condition & flaws
Surface
Surface refers to the condition of a card's front and back finish: scratches, scuffs, print defects, and gloss. It is one of the four areas graders assess.
A card's surface can show scratches, scuffs, indentations, loss of gloss, or printing flaws like print lines. Shiny chrome and refractor cards show surface issues more easily than matte cardstock, so they can be harder to get clean.
Surface problems are often only visible under angled light, which is why careful inspection matters.
Why it matters: a surface flaw can pull down an otherwise perfect card. Along with centering, it is a frequent reason a card misses gem mint, so it is worth checking under good light before buying or grading.
