Chrome

Chrome refers to cards printed on a shiny, reflective chromium stock instead of normal cardstock. Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome are the best-known chrome products.

A chrome card uses a metallic, glossy stock that looks and feels different from a standard base card. Chrome is the foundation for refractors: a refractor is a chrome card with an added refractive coating.

Bowman Chrome in particular is huge in prospecting, since a player's first Bowman chrome card is often the one collectors chase.

Why it matters: chrome versions usually command a premium over their paper counterparts, and the chrome parallels and autographs are where the real money in a product tends to sit.

This glossary is a plain-language reference for collectors, not financial or purchasing advice. Card values move, so always check recent sales before you buy or sell.
