Rookies & prospecting

True rookie

A true rookie is a player's official rookie card, the one bearing the RC logo, as opposed to earlier prospect or minor-league cards that predate it. The distinction affects value.

Because a player may have first Bowman or other prospect cards before they debut, collectors use "true rookie" to mean the official rookie card with the RC logo from the player's rookie season.

Both can be valuable, but they are different markets: prospectors chase the first Bowman, while mainstream collectors often prize the true rookie.

Why it matters: knowing which card is the true rookie prevents overpaying for a card marketed as a rookie that is really a prospect card, or missing the official RC that many collectors specifically want.
