First Bowman

Also called: 1st Bowman, prospect card

A first Bowman is a prospect's earliest Bowman card, printed before they reach the majors. Prospectors chase them hoping the player breaks out, which can send prices soaring.

Bowman is the home of prospecting. A player's first appearance in Bowman or Bowman Chrome, usually in a minor-league uniform, is their "first Bowman," and it often predates their official rookie card by a year or more.

Prospecting is speculative: you are betting on a player before they prove themselves, so most first Bowmans stay cheap while a few of future stars explode in value.

Why it matters: a first Bowman Chrome autograph of a top prospect can become a blue-chip card, but prospecting carries real risk, since many prospects never pan out.
