Rookie card (RC)

Also called: RC, rookie cards

A rookie card, marked with an RC logo, is a player's first card in a major brand's base set during their rookie season. It is usually the most collected card of a player.

A true rookie card carries the RC logo and appears in the flagship base set of a licensed brand in the player's first year at the top level. Earlier minor-league or prospect cards are usually not official rookie cards, even though they can be older.

A single player can have several RCs across different products from the same rookie year.

Why it matters: rookie cards are the anchor of a player's market. A star's key rookie, especially graded gem mint, is typically their most liquid and valuable card, which is why the RC logo matters so much.
