Parallel

A parallel is an alternate version of a base card with a different color or finish, usually printed in smaller quantities. Collecting every parallel of one card is called a rainbow.

A parallel keeps the same photo and design as the base card but changes the look, most often the border color or the finish, and is printed in a smaller run. Sets typically have a tiered ladder of parallels, with each color rarer and often serial numbered lower than the last.

For example, a card might have silver, blue, gold, and red parallels, with gold numbered to 50 and red numbered to 5.

Why it matters: scarcity drives price, so the rarer the parallel, the more it is worth. Chasing all of a card's parallels is called a rainbow, one of the hobby's favorite long-term chases.

This glossary is a plain-language reference for collectors, not financial or purchasing advice. Card values move, so always check recent sales before you buy or sell.
