Rookies & prospecting
Flagship
Flagship is a brand's main annual base set, such as Topps Series 1 and 2 for baseball. It defines the year's base rookie cards and is where most collectors begin.
Each year a manufacturer puts out a core base product that anchors the lineup, Topps flagship (Series 1, 2, and Update) in baseball is the classic example. The flagship sets the design and the official base rookie cards for the season.
Higher-end products come later with autographs and patches, but the flagship is the widely available, affordable backbone.
Why it matters: flagship rookies are accessible and heavily traded, so they are a common entry point, and a star's flagship RC in top grade can still carry serious value despite the larger print run.
This glossary is a plain-language reference for collectors, not financial or purchasing advice. Card values move, so always check recent sales before you buy or sell.
